The White House Tour

Washington D.C. - our nation's capital. My second favorite city in the US. There is so much intrigue there and so much to see. My first trip to DC was back in 2014. I remember it was Easter, gorgeous weather. The Cherry blossoms had already blossomed a month before, nevertheless it was absolutely beautiful.

I visited all the important sights from the Lincoln Memorial to the Arlington Cemetery and Library of Congress. While there, all I kept thinking was, wouldn't be great if I could actually visit the main attraction of all - The White House.

Once I got home I started doing research and found out that getting into the White House was not as impossible as I thought. As an American citizen you would have to submit a request through your state's senator. For more information click here.
I ended up submitting my request in October 2015. I didn't have a specific date in mind, so I asked for any weekend in the spring of 2016. In early March I received an email from Illinois Senator Kirk's office with the date and instructions for my scheduled visit two weeks in advance. It was time for another road trip.

The self-guided tour takes about an hour. Our scheduled time was at 8:30 in the morning. We left early to make sure we would find parking, which surprisingly is super affordable compared to our hometown of Chicago or NYC. The city was so peaceful in the morning. No tourists trying to get a glimpse of the White House, just a few Secret Service officers guarding the grounds.

After multiple security check points we were finally inside. The public tour of the White House takes you only through the East Wing. There is a West Wing tour as well, but it is invitation-only or you have to know someone who works in the WH.

The "People's House" was just as I'd expected. Beautiful furniture, priceless artifacts, kept up and decorated with fresh flowers, Former president's and first lady's portraits displayed throughout the house.

The State Dining Room was impeccable, I just stood there and took it all in. Many dinners have been hosted here for various heads of different state as well as royalty.  According to the Secret Service agent there is  a inscription prayer on the fireplace's mental that reads:

I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this House, and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.

The prayer comes from a letter that President Adams wrote to his wife upon moving into the house in 1800.

Once you head towards the exit, or I should say the front entrance, you encounter the presidential seal above a door that a lot of the visitors like to take pictures in front off. Once finished there, you're directed towards the exit where you're passing the portraits of the latest two presidents to hold office, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
It was certainly a great experience. I will try to go again, possibly during the holiday season when the house is decked out with Christmas trees and holiday decorations.

Under $150 Outfit

This dress is only $15. I thought it looked super polished. I put together an outfit around it for around $150. I'd wear it out for dinner maybe or a meeting. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Road Trip Essentials

SHOP NOW: 1. | 2. | 3. | 4. | 5. | 6. | 7. |

My family and I have been taking a lot of Road Trips lately. For some reason the older I get, the more attached I get to my parents. When I was younger that was not always the case, but I guess with age you get to appreciate these things more.

The main thing that I always make sure when I travel is that I am comfortable. Being cramped in the back of a car with a active Lab isn't always fun. I try to stay away from anything that's too tight, like skinny jeans, or expansive that I don't want to ruin. After all there will be a lot of spills and you certainly don't want to ruin your favorite piece.

My go-to bottoms are almost always leggings for obvious reasons. I pair it with a t-shirt and some kind of a hoody, cardigan or just a button down. Let's face it you will get cold and those items are the easiest to put on or take off. Sneakers are always a great choice for footwear and of course a baseball hat when you're ready for a nap and want to block the sun from getting in your eyes.

Off The Shoulder Tops

Off the Shoulder tops have become, or actually, should've been an essential in your wardrobe for many years now. You cannot talk about this staple without mentioning 60's bombshell Brigitte Bardot who made the chic neckline famous. The silhouette not only flatters almost any body type, but it is also very feminine.

It is the perfect piece for a weekend gateway or just a walk in the park or the museum, Wear it with a full skirt for a lady like look, or with a pair of shorts or skinny jeans for more laid back occasion. Chose a pencil skirt for a more professional appearance. Below are a few of my favorites.

2016 Tulip Time Festival

I've been hearing about the week long Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Mi for about five years now. Each year, I happen to be traveling in a different direction or I simply forget. This year I made sure to plan ahead. Mother's Day happened to be on the first weekend of the festival, so I grabbed my Suzi along for a road trip.

Holland is about a three hour drive from Chicago, so we packed our snacks and headed out at 7:30am. I wanted to avoid the crowds in order to take better pictures. We made a few pit stops on our way, but we were still able to make it by 10am (ET).

Our first stop was Neil's Dutch Village. It replicates the Netherlands in the 1800s with its architecture and canals, along some beautiful gardens. There are tons of activities for families with small children. A mini farm for petting animals, a carousel, a farris wheel, slides, swings and so much more.
Besides the family activities there is also a fabulous gift shop, which I found to be super affordable. If you chose to leave your vehicle here you may as there are shuttles available to take you to the festival.

Next we headed over to the Windmill Gardens Island, which I was most excited to see. Unfortunately this spring was much colder than usual, so the majority of the tulips had died and lost its color. There was a patch that seems to been added just before the festival begun.

We made the mistake and parked in the downtown area and walked to the gardens, but there is a lot of spaces available on the island. After we were finished with our photo ops we headed over to the downtown area that had a lot of vendors selling really nice merchandise.
For someone who actually has traveled to the Netherlands, I wasn't too impressed, but overall I had a fabulous time with my mom no matter the circumstances.

If I happen to go again in the future, I'd probably go a week before the festival starts to see the tulips in their peak and I would definitely avoid the weekends and stay away from the crowds.
